Our Current Building

Several people have reported that they cannot enter the building due to allergic reactions.
The current building is a converted one room firehouse. Parking is limited to less than 20 cars. Visitors may have to park in the neighboring St. Mary's or Village Market lots. If the lots are filled, drivers may have to back up a long driveway and onto First Parish Rd.
The one activity room serves as the passageway to the Council on Aging offices, making focusing on activities/learning more difficult. Privacy is impossible, as seniors deal with individual differences in ability.
Each different activity requires setup and breakdown and may involve moving and stacking chairs and tables. This can be a problem for many seniors.
With only one activity room the Council on Aging relies on other town facilities. Scituate is fortunate to have many volunteers, but coordinating activities at multiple locations is time-consuming
Staff has to set up and breakdown for every activity that we provide at the current Senior Center space, and sometimes at the Harbor building as well if it is a group meeting. Some exercise classes at the other building do also have to bring their chair into the group.
We are unable to provide:
-
Space for privacy, visiting professionals...
-
Daily Lunches and group socialization
-
Proper exercise space
-
Proper meeting space
-
Adequate parking
We can not offer:
-
New teaching programs and classes
-
Adding/increasing volunteer opportunities to residents of Scituate
-
Classroom space to accommodate interest/demand of citizenry
-
Proper staff involvement/supervision for participant needs due to lack of space
-
Any expansion of current programs and events due to limited physical space

Senior Center Participation Statistics

1,175 individual users.
This figure is expected to more than double with increased programming space in a new facility, which directly benefits 30% - 40% of our population.
